I do not know about everyone else, but I am ready to be done with 2020. Between the politics, violence, and coronavirus, I am despondent. And I still have a job, family, and friends. I cannot imagine what it was like to have had none of those things through the 2020 crisis. I hope the New Year brings only good things to those who have suffered most.
On previous New Years, my husband usually nudges me awake at 11:59 just in time for a New Year’s kiss, but not this year. We slept right through the festivities. Even though we were looking forward to 2021, we had to say, “good riddance to 2020”. I only wish the problems could not follow us to the new year.
Believe it or not, I started writing this blog in the hopes of lifting my spirits.
One bit of good news: I broke the cycle. Since we slept through the transition, I did not get to make a New Year’s resolution. Probably for the best since most resolutions are almost impossible to keep. Even the simple ones like being kinder to the neighbors, saying “hi” to everyone, or smiling more often. And I can forget about losing 20 lbs., building a six-figure bank account, or the coup de grace: quitting diet coke. If those things are possible then becoming an astronaut is still in play. Wait. I may have confused resolutions with wishes.
So. This is the year I stop making new year’s resolutions. Oops, I guess that counts. But from now on I will stop making new year’s resolutions. I will not wait for a transition day, hour, or minute to make a change. I am going to make a change in this moment, this hour, this day.
Therefore, I will just say “no” to things I love and hold dear…25% of the time. I know, it is not as impressive as completely quitting a vice or becoming an astronaut, but to succeed, I must give up the “all or nothing” mentality. Know thy self. Right?
So, I will do my best to lose 5 lbs., have a five-figure bank account, or cut out 25% of my diet coke intake. These things are certainly doable. Well, the diet coke thing is iffy. After all, Diet Coke is delicious without the caloric consequences. So good.
For everyone else, I wish you 100% success with your resolutions.
Happy New Year!!!
